# Session Service

A service to handle the Get, Update and Clearing of the Session

The session service is what creates and handles the creation, retrieval, updating and clearing of the UmbCheckout Basket within the .NET session.

You can access the session service by injecting `ISessionService` which can be found within the namespace `UmbCheckout.Core.Interfaces`

A shopper has one Basket per site root culture and currency (see [Prices, Currencies and Baskets](/v17/configuration/prices-currencies-and-baskets.md#one-basket-per-site-and-currency)). The overloads without a culture or currency use the current page's.

{% hint style="info" %}
Every method also has an overload that takes a `CancellationToken` as its last parameter. Call that one: the overloads without a token are `[Obsolete]`. See [Cancellation Tokens](/v17/core-services/cancellation-tokens.md).
{% endhint %}

#### Get

Gets the current UmbCheckout session from the .NET session (and, on licensed sites, from the cookie or database). A Basket whose checkout session has been paid is cleared and an empty one returned (see [Payment Flow / Lifecycle](/v17/payment-providers/payment-providers/stripe/payment-flow-lifecycle.md#when-the-basket-is-cleared)).

Parameters:

| Name            | Detail                                                 |
| --------------- | ------------------------------------------------------ |
| siteRootCulture | Optional: the culture of the site root |
| currencyCode | Optional: the 3-letter ISO currency code of the Basket |

```csharp
Task<UmbCheckoutSession> Get();
Task<UmbCheckoutSession> Get(string? currencyCode);
Task<UmbCheckoutSession> Get(string? siteRootCulture, string? currencyCode);
```

#### Update

Updates the current UmbCheckout session or create a new session if not found

Parameters:

| Name   | Detail                                                      |
| ------ | ----------------------------------------------------------- |
| basket | The [Basket](/v17/core-services/object-reference/basket.md) |

```csharp
Task<UmbCheckoutSession> Update(Basket basket);
```

#### Clear

Clears the UmbCheckout session from the .NET session. Returns `true` when the Basket is still present afterwards.

```csharp
Task<bool> Clear();
Task<bool> Clear(string? currencyCode);
Task<bool> Clear(string? siteRootCulture, string? currencyCode);
```

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://docs.umbcheckout.net/v17/core-services/session-service.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
